Diary Of A Busker Day 305 Saturday November 10th 2012 Winchester High Street 1. Opposite Vodafone. Time: 4:35-5:25pm 2. Opposite Bellis, Time: 5:34-6:25pm
I get through 50 minutes before it pours down, then move up the road and set up undercover (just about) and start off with Here Comes The Sun, although it’s raining and it’s dark – in fact BECAUSE it’s raining and it’s dark. After 15 minutes it eases off a bit so I drag my stuff out about 6 inches. At 6:10 four schoolkids – a boy and three girls – stop in front of me. One of the girls says they really like me and, noticing my camera next to my amp, says, ‘What’s the camera for?’ – a pretty stupid question, really. I explain it’s purpose out here; I use it to take photos of people I meet – the end result being they end up in my photo album. Would THEY like to be in it? After a short discussion it’s decided; two of them would and two wouldn’t, so the two that don’t, move to the side and I get a photo of the two that do; the boy and one of the girls: Dennis and Arid or Aren – it seems to keep changing when I try and find out how it’s spelt. Dennis wants to give me a £5 note – that’s too much, I just can’t take a fiver off a schoolkid, so I thank him but insist he takes some change – ‘I DO give change, you know.’ OK, he says – he’ll close his eyes, put his hand in the bucket and take four coins out. Whoa – that’s alright if they’re pound coins but what if they’re £2 coins, or there’s the other extreme: 1 or 2p coins – there are a few of everything bobbing around in there. I explain this situation. ‘Oh yeah’, he says. Hmm…he seems a nice enough lad – I give him back four pound coins.
