Diary Of A Busker Day 2548 Wednesday May 21st 2025 Winchester.
I held off going in because it was supposed to rain at 1:30 but it never did so I went in all the same. The top spot was free but I thought I’d spare the poor suffering shop people having to put up with me two days on the trot, and set up on the old corner of Marks & Spencers – sorry, M&S spot. And wouldn’t you know it, I’m not three songs in and it starts to drizzle and people are unfurling their umbrellas and I’m thinking ‘it’s not supposed to rain now, for fuck’s sake!’…but it stopped after a few minutes, thankfully.
I revisited Dixie McGuire, which I’d been practising at home yesterday but I messed it up big time and need to do a lot more before I bring it back out here. Tommy Emmanuel’s too difficult! I fared better with Life On Mars? – there was a bloke standing nearby who was mouthing most of the words “…oh man, look at those caveman go…” so when he came over I thought he’d contribute to the cause. Wrong! But he complimented me on the rendition, especially the end bit, which I got pretty much spot on, for once.
A bunch of foreign students listened from across the road, on the Sainsbury’s side. One boy came over and put in a solitary penny or euro, returned to the group who started walking towards Sainsbury’s, some of them looking at me, laughing.
At 3:50, after I’d played just over an hour and twenty minutes, it started to drizzle but this time more seriously so I did a quick Bond then packed up…and got a bit wet on the ride home, but at least I remembered to bring my hat.
