Diary Of A Busker Day 2570 Friday June 27th 2025 Winchester.
At The Buttercross; a bloke singing to a backing track and Don at his usual place, at the end of The Pentice. I say to Don, jokingly, ‘What the hell’s going on Don? Can you get rid of him?’ ‘He’s just started up, Marvin. You just come in?’ ‘Yeah, just come in.’ After a bit more chat, he says ‘Well, it’s a good day (sunny but very windy) make the most of it’ and I head round the corner to The Square – not much going on there, then down to the crossroads where I set up…and I shouldn’t have bothered because after one whole hour I’ve accumulated the massive amount of £1.05. Added to that was the constant annoyance of two things; having to keep my right foot over the side of the guitar case to stop it blowing away (which meant I had to sit down most of the time apart from standing up if there was a break in the wind, which was necessary as I was nodding off a few times while sitting down, probably due to the hot temperature) and secondly, having my hair blow over my eyes. I need a haircut!
I had to change the amp batteries halfway through the set so in the break I took them to the recycle batteries bin down the road in Sainsbury’s, then up to The Square where it was a bit more lively than an hour before. The dosh was a bit slow coming in but at least it came in…well, compared to the first spot it did, although nothing to write home about. I got £9 for an hour, so £10.05 for two hours. Appalling, though thankfully the wind wasn’t quite as bad.
Two of the doners for the second set were two young women who were sitting outside The Old Vine and who actually clapped after Here Comes The Sun – obviously out-of-towners! After donating they made use of the chalk put around the area for the children, and scrawled, with two small hearts at either side of their names…
