Diary Of A Busker Day 381 Saturday June 1st 2013 Winchester High Street Opposite Vodafone. Time: 2:40-3:47pm
Two happy coincidences occur. During Albatross, a man walks by, contributes and says ‘That was released on my birthday.’ Then, just after I start James Bond, a girl wearing a black T-shirt with 007 in big letters walks by. No contribution there, though, so that’s a bit less happy than the first one.
I meet a man I’ve seen a few times but never spoken to him until now, when he comes up to me. His name’s Chris and he’s a West Indian-looking scouser. I think that might have something to do with the visiting sailor’s from years gone by! Anyway, he really likes my guitar and asks how I keep it so shiny. I say the body’s not flat so there’s loads of curves that reflect all the light.
When he came up, I was playing When I’m Sixty-Four or Norwegian Wood – I can’t remember which one. I know it was a Beatles song though – I think that’s why he came up because he said he once saw them, so of course I ask for particulars. The date? – ‘In 1964.’ ‘Wow!…where?’ ‘At the Liverpool Empire.’ Cool. He must have been young though; he says he’s sixty. So that would make him a mere eleven in 1964. Very cool.
