Day 2472

Diary of A Busker day 2472 Sunday December 22nd 2024 Winchester.

A(nother) cold day, 6 degrees…and windy, which doesn’t help. There’s the omnipresent bunch of carol-singers-in-front-of-the-tree, so the Buttercross is out of bounds but there’s no one around the corner in The Square and that’ll do me until I freeze up, which won’t be long in this weather. I’ll be lucky if I can stand an hour. Speaking of which, standing is now the order of the day – it’s an unusual occurrence to be sitting down these days. In fact, the only time I do it is usually for Cavatina and only because John Williams does!

It’s pretty windy from the word go but it gradually got worse and the gigbag blew a few feet away a couple of times and after a bit my right foot was permanently on the end of it to stop it buggering off. In fact, the wind blew my telescopic rainbow stool a few feet to the left three times. It didn’t blow over, it just slided away, like some poltergeist situation!

I had a new toy with me today – an E-Bow which I’d only had for a day. I decided to take it out and “play” it in between some songs, which must have sounded weird; this strange cello-sounding thing suddenly coming in for a minute, which was long enough. Hey, it’s Marvin E-Bow Naylor…Marvin B-Bow Naylor! Rain has been the order of the day for yonks now and once or twice it looked like it was going to start up again, which brought forth one or two ‘Oh, for fuck’s sake!’s from me. But it didn’t and I was lucky…and I was lucky to get through not an hour but an hour and a half. I had to stop because the fingertips were freezing and I was messing up things, like Last Christmas, which was a mess. It’s a shame because the rest of me is fine in the cold. It’s just that small part of me, but the most important part! Anyway, the takings were £31.61- fine for 1 1/2 hours. Job done.
