Day 2527

Diary Of A Busker Day 2527 Tuesday April 22nd 2025 Winchester.

At around 9:30 in the morning, while taking the coinage to the bank, the bloke who sings old songs to backing tracks was just setting up at The Buttercross so I waited until mid-afternoon before I ventured in, when I reckoned he’d be gone. I started off by debuting a new song, Waterloo Sunset…well not the whole song as there’s a bit that’s really difficult and I haven’t worked out how to do it yet. It’s the “every day I look at the world from my window…” bit. But even just doing a shortened version, it got a comment. It was from the leader of a tourist group who were a few feet to my right. In fact, it was after the second song, Albatross, when he said ‘What was that one you just played?’ I played a few seconds of Albatross – ‘You mean that one?’ I said. ‘No no, the one before.’ So I played a bit of Waterloo Sunset – ‘Yeah, that one.’ ‘That’s Waterloo Sunset.’ ‘That’s great! It’s on my London By Night playlist. Well done!’ No donation but fuck it, he recognised it and that means so will lots of others, which means coinage…unfortunately, despite playing it a few more times, no coinage today!

One good thing that’s now changed (hopefully) for a few months, is the tourists are now coming back in the week so things should brighten up, literally and metaphorically, as it’s been more or less pointless playing in Winchester mid-week. It’s still not warmed up much, though, and I’m only able to play an hour and a half before the fingers shut down. But the tourists came good and I walked off (then, upon reaching Jewry Street, cycled!) with just under £38.
