Winchester
Out a bit earlier today and I could have set up in The Square but I fancied yesterday’s spot. Then again, yesterday’s papers is yesterday’s news and who’s interested in that?! And so it came to pass that today was nothing like yesterday. Well, not in terms of coinage. I played the same time; two hours and five minutes but got £30.69 – less than a third of what I took yesterday.
Still, £15 an hour is not too bad. There was one funny moment. After one of my Winchester Cathedral renditions (now in the key of C, like the 1966 original. I looked at some videos and even Sinatra did it!), a couple walked by and the woman said ‘That’s the reason I came to live here, fifty odd years ago I applied to go to college and I’ve been here ever since.’
‘Well, that’s amazing I’m playing it just as you’re walking by.’ Amazing, it may have been but not amazing enough to warrant a donation! Thinking about it, they were the only people to speak to me, which is another big difference from yesterday. Weird.
One thing that’s doing my head in about this spot is the traffic. There are loads of cars and vans who turn the corner in front of me only to end up reversing at the top where The Square is, because their stupid satnav is sending them up there but you can’t drive any further. So there’s all the cars coming back here and then more on their way up and the road isn’t wide enough so there are constant face-offs with drivers. At one point, a huge van was stuck because two cars couldn’t work out what to do and a cop car turned up and a cop got out to stop the traffic coming up so the van could get past.
The temperature was again like yesterday, around 10 degrees but it’s set to get a few degrees colder over the next few days.
