Day 2679
Friday April 24th 2026
Winchester
Nice warm and sunny afternoon in The Square, end of the week, people should be happy, a few full tables outside Three Joes, The Old Vine, The Eclipse, should be fine to do an hour, make a few quid, maybe even £20. Definitely more than Wednesday. What did I get for an hour? Sodding £3.27, that’s what. Definitely NOT more than Wednesday. I don’t know why I bothered to make myself presentable – crisp white Paul Smith shirt (charity shop), black waistcoat, white French jacket and shiny black DM brogues. As Kenneth Williams noted in his final diary entry – “what’s the bloody point?” I don’t know.
Maybe my new amp doesn’t sound good…no, it does. I know it does! Still, maybe I’ll hitch the Janglebox up to it, give it a bit of compression. I’ll give it a go at home.
Anyway yes, I was more or less completely ignored, apart from the museum bloke who came out as I was about to start up – ‘Sorry, it’s nothing to do with you (he was shutting up shop, closing the entrance door), I’m just closing!’ ‘That’s OK, you carry on’ I replied fairly cheerfully, before my mood darkened due to lack of acknowledgement/existence.
There wasn’t even a donation when I was packing up after the hour – actually, it was an hour and two minutes as I slipped Bond in as an afterthought, knowing EVERYONE knows that one. But even that didn’t bring in a penny.
One thing’s for certain – I won’t be here tomorrow. There’s a blue bike with yellow tyres leaning against one of the bollards…or was it a yellow bike with blue tyres? Anyway, there’s a sign on it – MASS CYCLE RIDE 25/4/2026.
