Day 2673
Tuesday March 31st 2026
Winchester
That young keyboard bloke is at the Buttercross again, and I’m approving of his choice of music – Chopin’s Opus 9 No.1 Nocturne. What an appropriate thing to hear just before our impending Palma/Valldemossa trip next week. A Prelude even!
I’m down at Nando’s and it’s a warm day. So warm I even consider taking off my leather jacket, even the waistcoat…but not the cravat. The cravat stays. Well, I considered taking off the jacket and waistcoat but in the event, didn’t go through with any disrobing.
Coinage is slow but I’m saved a disastrous session by a girl who I reckon was around 18. She was sitting with her mate on one of the concrete blocks opposite M&S – the ones cutting off/restricting access to the pedestrian bit of the high street. They were listening for a few songs then she came over and asked to buy a CD. I gave her the whole ‘The one that’s an hour is £10, the one that’s 48 minutes long is £8 or I do two for £15…special offer just for today in Winchester!’ Well, she took me up on it, even better – ‘I’ll take them both for £20, keep the change.’ That’s a £18 profit.
She says the music reminded her of her father, who’s no longer about.
‘Oh, I’m sorry. he must have been young.’
‘No…well, he was in his sixties, but your music really reminds me of him…and he used to play the guitar. Here, I’ve got a photo…’
She scrolls through her phone and shows me a photo of a red electric guitar.
‘Oh, that looks nice – nice grain on that. What’s the make? Can you zoom in on the headstock?’ She enlarges it and it’s a Westbury.’
‘Oh, a Westbury. Very nice.’
She returns to her mate, they listen for a few more songs then the next time I look, they’re gone. Well, she was the Saviour Of The Day because that £18 made up most of the total of the two hour session’s £30.65.
